Fractional distillation

• Fractional Distillation is used to separate miscible liquids

• Fractional distillation:

  • Mixture heated
  • Substances, due to different BPs, rise in different fractions
  • Mixture of gases condense on the beads in the fractional column
  • Beads are heated to BP of lowest substance, so it cant condense on the beads.
  • Other substances keep condensing and drip back into the flask
  • The beaker is changed after each fraction
