  • Led by the duke of Norfolk, earl of Westmorland and the earl of Northumberland
  • Rebelled because they questioned Elizabeth’s legitimacy, retained the catholic beliefs of the north, and wanted Mary queen of Scot’s on the throne
  • Duke of Norfolk planned to marry Mary queen of Scots but Elizabeth stopped that
  • Norfolk left court without permission
  • Northern earls took control of Durham cathedral and celebrated an illegal catholic mass
  • 4600 men marched south, capturing Bernard Castle and Hartlepool Port
  • Elizabeth struggled to raise an army, but got the earl of Sussex to raise one
  • The rebels disbanded and the leaders fled to Scotland
  • Earl of Northumberland executed, along with 700 men in total
  • Westmoreland escaped to France and died in poverty
  • Norfolk spent 10 months in the Tower of London, but was eventually released and put under house arrest
