  • Behavioural - phobias
    Panic - may involve a range of behaviours like crying, screaming, or running away.
    Avoidance - considerable effort to prevent contact with the stimulus. This can make it hard to go about everyday life.
    Endurance - an alternative behaviour to avoidance. Involves remaining with the stimulus and continuing to experience anxiety.
  • Emotional - phobias
    Anxiety - an unpleasant state of high arousal. Prevents an individual relaxing and makes it difficult to experience a positive emotion
    Fear - the immediate response we experience when we encounter or think about the stimulus.
    Emotional response is unreasonable - disproportionate to the threat posed
  • Cognitive - phobias
    Selective attention to the stimulus. - hard to look away
    Irrational beliefs
    Cognitive distortions - unrealistic thinking
  • Behavioural - depression
    Activity levels - reduced levels of energy making them lethargic
    Disruption to sleep and eating - insomnia or hypersomnia and appetite can increase or decrease.
    Aggression or self harm - depression is associated with irritability and this may extend to aggression and self harm
  • Emotional - depression
    Lowered mood - feelings of 'worthlessness' and 'empty'
    Anger - lead to self harm
    Lowered self esteem - self loathing or a dislike for themselves
  • Cognitive - depression
    Poor concentration - hard to stick to a task or may find simple decisions difficult.
    Attention to the negative - bias to focusing on the negative
    Absolutist thinking - 'black and white' thinking

    Complusions are repetitive
    Compulsions reduce anxiety
    Avoidance

    Anxiety and distress - unpleasant and frightening thoughts
    Depression - low mood
    Guilt and disgust
  • Cognitive - OCD
    Obsessive thoughts - 90% of people with this disorder has recurring intrusive thoughts
    Cognitive coping strategies - e.g. meditation
    Insight into excessive anxiety - awareness that thoughts and behaviours are irrational.
