  -pressure of obey can be resisted if there is another person who disobeys.

  -in one of milgrams variations rate of obedience dropped from 65% to 10% when participant was joined by a disobedient confederate

  -acts as a model of dissent for participant to copy and frees him to act from his own conscience

  -refers to the sense we each have abt what directs events in our lives

  -internal locs: they believe that the things that happen to them are largely controlled by themselves

  -external loc: believe the things that happen are outside of their control

  -loc is a scale and individuals vary in their position on it so ppl are not just internal or extenal

  -so there is high internal, low internal, high external, low external
• explain resistance to social influence using loc

  -ppl with high internal loc r more able to resist pressures to obey and conform

  -if person takes personal responsibility for their actions, they tend to base their decisions on their own beliefs rather than depending on opinions of others

  -they also tend to be more self-confident and have higher intelligence

  -these traits lead to greater resistance to social influence.
