Importance of antenatal classes

  • Mothers
    • Attend classes once of week
    • starts around 30-32 of pregnancy
    • Mothers expecting multiples start around week 24 as they are more likely to born early
  • Classes
    • Classes will inform parents about labour, pain, types of births and birth intervention so they know what to expect.
    • There are also refresher classes for those who have already had children.
  • Exercise
    More active a mother is during pregnancy, the easier it will be to adapt to changing shape, weight gain and cope with labour.
  • Healthy Diet
    • Mothers are advised to follow the eatwell guide
    • Mothers are also told what foods to avoid such as alcohol, raw eggs and uncooked meats
  • Breastfeeding
    • Mothers are advised to breastfeed for atleast the first two weeks
    • This is because a concentrated form of milk called colostrum is produced - no other milk has such concentrated immune boosters
