Hormones To Treat Infertility

• FSH and LH are given in a fertility drug to a woman, who may them become pregnant the normal way
• IVF:

  • IVF involves giving a parent FSH and LH to stimulate the maturation of several eggs
  • the eggs are collected from the uterus and fertilised by sperm in the laboratory
  • the fertilised eggs develop into embryos
  • at the stage when they are tiny balls of cells, one or two cells are inserted into the uterus
• Cons of fertility treatments:

  • it is very emotionally and physically stressful
  • success rates not high
  • can lead to multiple births which are a risk to both the babies and the parent
