an explanation of how stm is organised and how it functions
it is concerned with the mental space that is active when we are temporarily storing and manipulating info
name the 4 components of stm
central executive, phonological loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad, episodic buffer
explain the central executive
-has supervisory role
-it monitors incoming data, focuses and divides our limited attention and allocates slave systems to task
-it has a very limited processing capacity and does not store info
explain phonological loop
-deals with auditory info and preserves the order in which info arrives
-it is divided into phonological store, which stores words we hear
-and divided into articulatory process which allows maintenance rehearsal, capacity of loops is 2 secs worth of what we can say
explain visuo-spatial sketchpad
-stores visual and/or spatial info
-has a limited capacity, according to baddeley of 3/4 objects
-divided into visual cache which stores visual data
-and divided into inner scribe, which records arrangement of objects
explain episodic buffer
-temporary store for info , integrating the visual, spatial and verbal info processed and maintaining sense of time sequencing(recording events that are happening)
-can be seen as storage component of central executive and has limited capacity of abt 4 chunks
