who came up with types of long-term memory and why
endel tulving
as he realised that the multi-store model's view of ltm was too
simplistic
so he proposed 3 ltm stores:
semantic
/ procedural and
episodic
explain episodic memory
-refers to our ability to recall events from our lives
-firstly they are
time-stamped
: so u remember when they happended and what happened
-second, ur memory of
single episode
will include several elements e.g ppl and places
-third, u have to make
conscious effort
to recall episodic memories, we do this
quickly
but we are still aware that we are searching for a memory
explain semantic memory
-our shared
knowledge
of the world
-not
time-stamped
as we usually dont know when we first heard abt a particular thing
-less
personal
and more abt facts we share
-it is less
vulnerable
to distortions and forgetting than
episodic
explain procedural
-our
memory
for actions, skills ( how we do things )
-we can recall these without
conscious awareness
or much
effort
-our ability to do this becomes
automatic
thru
practise
-these skills are hard to explain to someone else
