  • Repetition
    The action of repeating something that has already been said or written
  • Anaphora
    When the same word or phrase is repeated at the start of sentences or clauses. This technique adds rhythm and emphasis to writing or speeches, often used to make a point or create unity
  • Juxtaposition/antithesis
    Placing two objects side by side to highlight their differences
  • Oxymoron
    Two opposite words right next to each other (Bright smoke or peaceful war)
  • Alliteration
    Where words in a sentence or phrase start with the same sound
  • Sibilance
    Used to create a hissing or rushing sound in poetry or prose. It is achieved through the repetition of 's' or 'sh' sounds in close succession
  • Symbolism
    The use of words or images to symbolize specific concepts, people, objects, or events
  • Metaphor
    A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things by stating that one thing is another thing. It is used to make a point more vivid, interesting, or memorable by comparing it to something else
  • Simile
    A figure of speech that compares two unlike things using the words "like" or "as." It is used to make a description more vivid or to help the reader understand complex ideas
  • Flashback
    A sudden and vivid recollection of a past event or experience, often triggered by a certain sight, smell, sound, or feeling
  • Anecdote
    A short and specific story or account of an interesting or amusing event. Anecdotes are often used to illustrate a point or highlight a particular aspect of a topic in a more engaging and memorable way
