  • they demanded reintroduction of Catholicism, wanted Henry 8's six article, Latin, communion in one kind,prayers for dead and mass
  • Complaints on taxes for sheep and cloth
  • Resentment to William Body, investigating church property in 1547, destruction of church images by Body led to a group murdering him.
  • introduction of the New Prayer book on 10th June 1549 was the final straw, people in Devon provoked by priests using this
  • Humphrey Arundell led the protestors in Cornwall. Rebels persuaded priests to deliver catholic mass and moved forces to Cornwall 20th June
  • A gentleman called Hellier, who attempted to calm the rebels was murdered
  • 29th June Lord Russel (catholic member of council) urged to meet rebels and find peaceful settlement, only given small army due to various revolts in the country
  • 28th July, under pressure from Somerset, Russel advanced against the rebels and aided by forces of Lord Grey on 3rd August
  • 6th August Russel received reinforcements under Sir William Herbert
  • Somerset placed with more pressure to defeat the rebels as France declared war on 8th August
  • 16th August Russel advanced and defeated the rebels at Sampford Courtenay
  • estimated 3000 killed, government acted illegally and executed without trial, confiscating and redistributing property
  • This rebellion in article 14 of their concerns urged for the restoration of abbey and chantry lands, which had been acquired by local and gentry
