meiosis

    Cards (8)

    • what is meiosis?
Cell division process that produces gametes with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
    • how many cell divisions are involved in meiosis?
      2
    • where does meiosis take place in humans?
      ovaries and testes
    • what steps are involved in meiosis?
      • each pair of chromosomes inside the cells replicate and the cell splits in two (mitosis)
      • this forms two identical daughter cells. The diploid cell divides again
      • this creates Haploid cells (four genetically different gametes that each have half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell)
    • what happens after the cell divides in meiosis?
      • the male gamete fuses/ fertilises the female gamete, combining the split chromosomes
      • the resulting new cell divides by mitosis to create a copy of itself
      • mitosis repeats many times to produce lots of cells in the embryo
      • As soon as the embryo reaches a certain size, cells begin to differentiate (specialise).
    • what is a diploid cell?
A diploid cell is a cell that contains two sets of chromosomes, one set inherited from each parent.
    • what is a haploid cell?
A haploid cell is a cell that contains only one set of chromosomes.
    • what is the difference between meiosis and mitosis?
      meiosis:
      • 2 cell divisions
      • 4 daughter cells
      • haploid daughter cells (23)
      • gametes
      mitosis:
      • 1 cell division
      • 2 daughter cells
      • diploid daughter cells (23 pairs)
      • body cells
