  • Edward fell ill late January 1553; privy council warned it was serious. Late May suffered relapse and on 6th July died.
  • Lady Jane Grey was queen for 9 days
  • the 1534 act of succession declared Mary illegitimate however in 1543 third act of succession both Mary and Elizabeth allowed to take throne yet did not reverse illegitimacy
  • Northumberland's son married LJG in May 1553; Northumberland was selfish and wanted political power
  • 10th July, LJG against her wishes proclaimed queen
  • Edward's death kept quiet for 2 days so Northumberland and council could form the devise
  • Mary proclaimed herself queen and sent letters to the privy council and towns informing them.
  • Mary asked Charles v for help, Northumberland has to leave London and the privy council had a chance to change their views.
  • When Mary arrived in London she was met with cheers and support
  • Mary killed Northumberland, LJG and Dudley while releasing Gardiner and Norfolk from jail
  • Edward was able to get 102 councillors to sign the devise saying LDJ should be queen however a lot of them avoided the session in hopes of getting out of it
