    • explain free will in humanistic approach
      -diff to other approaches claiming humans are self-determining and have free will
      -ppl are still affected by external & internal influences but are also active agents who can determine their own development
      -rogers and maslow reject scientific models that establish principles of human behaviour
      -as active agents we r all unique and psych should concern itself with study of subjective experience rather than general laws
    • describe maslows hierarchy of needs
      -described a hierarchy of needs that motivate our behaviour
      -to achieve our primary goal of self-actualisation, a number of other deficiency needs must be first met
      -at bottom is physiological needs then safety and security then love and belongingness then self-esteem then self-actualisation
      -a person is only able to progress thru hierarchy once current need in sequence has been met
    • define self actualisation
      the desire to grow physiologically and fulfill ones full potential becoming what u are capable of
    • explain the self , congruence and worth
      -rogers argued that for personal growth to be achieved ones concept of self must have congruence with ideal self
      -if too big of a gap exists, self actualisation will not be possible due to the negative feelings of self worth
      -to reduce the gap rogeres developed client-centred therapy to help ppl cope with problems of everyday living
      -many issues we experience as adults are rooted in childhood & can often be explained by unconditional positive regard from parents
