    • what is the nervous system
      -a specialised network of cells in human body and is our primary internal communication system
      -based on electrical and chemical signals whereas the endocrine system is based on hormones

      -to collect, process and respond to info in the environment
      -to co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body

      -central nervous system

      -made up of the brain and spinal cord
      -the brain is the centre of all conscious awareness, the brains outer layer the cerebral cortex is only 3mm thick and covers brain
      -the brain is highly developed in humans and is what distinguishes our higher mental functions from those of other animals
      -the brain is divided into two hemispheres
      -the spinal cord is an extension of the brain it passes msgs to and from the brain and connects nerves to the pns. it is also responsible for reflex actions

      -transmits messages via millions of neurons, to and from the cns
      -divided further into autonomic and somatic nervous system
      -autonomic-governs vital functions in body e.g breathing, heart rate
      -somatic-governs muscle movement and receives info from sensory receptors

      -works alongside the n.s to control vital functions in body
      -acts more slowly than n.s but has widespread & powerful effects
      -various glands produce hormones which r secreted into bloodstream & affect any cell in body that has receptor for that particular hormone
      -main glands: hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries, testes
      -pituitary gland is located in brain and also called master gland bc it controls the release of hormones from all the endocrine glands in body
