protein synthesis

Cards (4)

  • what is the difference between mrna and DNA?
mrna is shorter and is only a single strand
  • what are the 2 steps of protein synthesis?
    Transcription and translation
  • what happens in the step transcription?
    • an enzyme called RNA polymerase binds to the the DNA at the start of the gene
    • the two strands of DNA separate apart so its bases are exposed
    • the enzyme then moves along the DNA and reads the bases and use to make MRNA
    • once it reaches the end it detaches and the MRNA is left which goes to the ribosomes
  • what happens in the step translocation?
    • the MRNA strand and the ribosomes bind together
    • the TRNA have amino acids on top and an anticodon of the bottom which is specific to a particular triplet on the MRNA which brings down the correct amino acid
    • the ribosome joins them together to make a chain of amino acids which becomes a protein which detaches and folds
