  • What is lamination via encapsulation 
    Sheet of paper encapsulated by a polymer pouch or film roll and heat sealed
    Polymer: mix of PET & EVA

    Applied by roller or spray 
    Protect from moisture/dirt/UV light(colour fading)
    E.g menu cards, business cards
  • How is film lamination used 
    Made with PP and an adhesive so it sticks to the paper
    Fed from a roller and pressure is applied 
  • What is embossing
    Craeates a RAISED Design on the surface to give a visual and tactile effect
    E.g greeting cards, chocolate boxes, invitation cards
  • What two materials could embossing dies be made from
    Stainless steel
    Brass
  • What is a blind emboss

    An embossment with no ink or foil attatched
  • What are the names of the 2 dies used in embossing 
    Male die and female die
  • What is debossing
    Same as embossing however the imprinted depression sits below the surface 
  • What is foil blocking
    The application of heat and pressure to a metallic paper(foil) to create areas of depth and texture. Add aesthetic to business cards, company logos
  • What types of foils are available in foil blocking
    Matt, Gloss, Holographic, Clear
  • What happens if the heat is too high during foil blocking
    The foil will bubble and peel
  • What happens if the the heat is too low or pressure isn't held long enough during foil blocking  
    The foil will not adhere to the paper
  • What is Varnishing
    Clear, non-pigmened ink used in precoated papers
    Enhance colour
    Offer some protection against dirt, fingerprintsand water
    Gloss, Matt, Satin are available
  • Why is Varnishing only available for pre-coated papers
    They will not soak up the ink and swell or bleed colour
  • What is UV Varnishing
    Providing a very smooth high quality finish, varnish applied to a set of rollers and sheet passed under UV light to cure
  • What is spot varnishing
    Varnish applied in specific areas not the whole surface
    Varnishing/UV vanishing can take place afterwards
