  • Both the psychodynamic approach and social learning theory emphasise the role
of identification with the same sex parent in development.
  • The humanistic approach is more holistic than the biological approach as it
focuses on the whole individual whilst the biological approach reduces complex
human behaviour to single components such as genes.
  • One similarity between the behaviourist approach and the cognitive approach is
they both use experiments as their main research method. Another similarity is
that they both can be considered to be reductionist, the behaviourist approach
has environmental reductionism and the cognitive approach has machine
    reductionism.
  • The psychodynamic and humanistic approach are similar in the fact they both
use interviews as one of their main methods of investigation. This shows how
they both take an idiographic approach to research and focus on the experiences
of the individual. However the psychodynamic approach has psychic determinism
where it argues behaviour is determined by our unconscious which we have no
control over whilst the humanistic approach states that all individuals have free
will and can choose how to behave in any given situation.
