  • What the Hoyt model shows:
    Sectors of different land use around central CBD
    Suggests that business activity is still within the CBD
    Industry noted to follow particular transport routes
    • High class residential areas developed where there were distinct physical or social attractions e.g. river
    • Lower class were in unfavourable location with less transport links
  • Improvements from Burgess:
    • More accurate
    • Sectors not rings easier to understand
    • Not linear as transport developed
    • Still apply to urban areas today
    • More realistic industries located around one area
  • Criticisms of Hoyt:
    • Class system related - outdated
    • Confusing and difficult to interpret
    • Implies sudden changes
    • Doesn't reference physical landscape
