Cultural and heritage cultures

Cards (4)

  • Cultural and heritage quarters features:
    Cultural quarters:
    • Cultural production ~ making objects, products
    • Cultural consumption ~ galleries, theatres
    Heritage quarters:
    • Focus upon history and character of the area
Aim - encourage growth and revitalise local economy in the arts and creative industries, improve 'perception of place', benefit from the 'multiplier effect' (bring financial benefits to the wider area)
  • EXAMPLE: Manchester's Northern Quarter:

60 small shops e.g. fashion boutiques
    Market with independent traders
    Piccadilly record shop
Vintage clothing, luxury fashion and contemporary design shops
  • EXAMPLE: Manchester's Northern Quarter, what will there be?
    • The pedestrianisation of most of Stevenson Square > decrease cars and emissions and traffic and noise > safer
    • A two-way cycle lane, new signs for cyclists
    • Pedestrian and cyclist crossing
    • Widened footpaths
    • Pay and display removed on Hilton Street > discourage cars > use public transport instead or work/cycle > decrease carbon footprint
BUT becoming homogenised - not unique
  • EXAMPLE: Manchester's Northern Quarter - concerns:
    • Area become tourist magnet + Airbnb hotspot and party district
    • High property prices > gentrification, locals can't afford
    • Area become overrun with bars and restaurants owned by 'mini empires'
    • Rent put up 40% with big property developers moving in
    • More litter, not cleaning waste
