  • 1834 poor law -punishing poor people for being poor. To avoid the poor being put in prisons for being "lazy" they can work for free in workhouses.
  • "are there no prisons/workhouses?" - the ghost of christmas present mirrors scrooge's words . Dickens was critical of this poor law because of his experience.
