QaanaaQ - EXTREME ENVIRONMENT

Cards (3)

  • what is QaanaaQ
the arctic covers 14km², QaanaaQ is made up of inuit people who are traditional hunters (e.g. Narwhal skin for vitamin C).
    • 4 months of complete darkness
    • less than 40 groups left
    • expensive food = 4 lambchops costs £35 (8 in UK)
    • migration means a loss of culture
    • limit on 6 polarbears to be killed a year
  • how does climate change impact their traditional food resources
increased temperatures create slushy ice, means that they cannot hunt for food as their routes are dangerous. less ice also means polar bears move more inland and eat berries (lower body mass so less good food). fish species taken over by warm water variety. southern animals move north and bring disease.
  • how does food insecurity impact their diets
more pollution and contamination of water in animals, means people are turning to non-hunting options (ecnomic and obesity issues). food is expensive and limited due to remoteness and few job options. a decline in grazing animals due to the earlier spring, means they are born too late and miss foilage
