  • How did wages and work improve from 1924-29 ?
    Working hours reduced and wages rose , however hyperinflation made employment insecure . 3 % of workers' earnings were deducted to be put towards insurance that would give them basic amounts of benefits if they became ill or unemployed .

    15 % rent tax was introduced to fund building associations . Between 1925 and 1929 101000 homes were built due to the housing shortage .

    There was a drop in women working from 75 % in 1918 to 36 % in 1925 . Women were encouraged to go to university and proffesions such as teaching and medicine offered new opportunities . Few women secured high status jobs .

    Greater earning power meant more independence for young single women . They were less intersted in marriage and family and more interested in having a good time . Their behaviour was not liked by some men who felt traditional values were being lost .

    Women could vote and stand in elections from 1918 . 90 % voted at elections . Article 109 of the constitution stated that women had equal rights to men and could enter professions on an equal basis . Marriage was an equal partnership .

In 1920 the DAP set up permanent headquaters and Hitler became second in command . He then suggested the new name - the National Socialist German Workers Party ( NSDAP ) . In July 1921 , Hitler became leader of the Nazi party .

    Written by Hitler and Drexler in 1920 . It included : increased pensions , nationalise industries , get rid of the treaty of versaillies , stop unemployment , build up Germany's armed forces , no Jews could be citizens , expand Germany all citizens to have equal rights , every hard working German to have the chance of higher education , the state must protect mothers and infants and make laws for compulsory sports .

    The stormtroopers were a paramilitary force made up of unemployed ex soldiers . They were formed in 1921 by Hitler and put under the command or Ernst Rohm . They were nicknamed the brownshirts and were used to disrupt opposition meetings and to control crowds and any opposition to Hitler - often very violently .

    On the 8th November 1923 Hitler and 600 SA members entered a beer hall in Muchich where the Bavarian governmnent was meeting . Hitler forced government leaders to support him . Rohm took over local police and army headquaters . General Ludendorff let the leaders go when Hitler left .

    On the 9th November 1923 Hitler gathered with 1000 SA and 2000 volunteer supporters and marched on Munich town centre to declare himslef President of Germany . They were met by state police . Someone opened fire and there was chaos . Ludendorff , Rohm and Streicher were arrested and Hitler fled before being arrested on the 11th while hiding at a friends house .

    Hitler used his trial to publicise his views . He used his time in prison to write Mein Kampf , which became a best seller when published - it outlined his political ideas in particular on Jews . Hitler realised he needed to rethink his tactics as using force wasn't enough . He was sentenced to 5 years but was released after 9 months . The ban on the NSDAP was lifted by 1925 .

    Hitler organised the conference to address the splits between the socialist and nationalist wings of the Nazi movement . This secured Hitler's power and his vision of Nazism taken forward .

    In October 1929 US companies lost billions of dollars in value overnight . Many banks and businesses were ruined and a worldwide depression resulted . The US stopped lending money to Germany and demanded all loans to be repaid .

    He was a good orator and had a strong image , which appeared on most publicity material , he travelled round the country giving speeches and talking on the radio . The party adopted modern technology e.g aeroplanes .

    He persuaded business people he could solve the economic crisis , he persuaded working class people that he could give them work and food , he persuaded middle class people he couls protect them from the communists , solve the economic crisis and return Germany to traditional values . He persuaded young people to join him by providing something exciting to be part of . He persuaded women the Nazis would save their families .
