      A major challenge African nationalists faced was to create a common African identity

    • Whites: most dominant group were Afrikaners and those of British descent
      Tended to be wealthy and highly educated
      1951--> 60% were of Dutch, German and French descent
      They remained politically divided from those in the British Cape
      1951--> 1 million
    • Coloured/ Indian
      Largely based in the Western Cape and mostly spoke Afrikaans
      Indians were 3% of the population and became English speaking

      1951--> 1.1 million, 9% of the population
