  • Nightingale's changes in the Crimea established new standards of patient care
  • Wards were cleaned, patients were given a regular wash, clean clothes and had their bedding changes regularly
  • Patients were separated according to their illness to prevent spread of disease
  • Beds were spaced out, fresh air circulated from open windows
  • 1859, Notes on nursing - Set out the training nurses should receive, nurses were taught to be as clean as possible, to change dressings and to be proper assistants to doctors and surgeons
  • 1863 Notes on hospitals - Introduced new ideas about the design of hospitals. Incorporate use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet and follow a suitable diet.
  • St Thomas Hospital adopted the 'pavilion principle' devised by Nightingale - six separate wards at right angles to a long, linked corridor which encouraged good circulation of air.
