Nightingale's changes in the Crimea established new standards of patient care
Wards were cleaned, patients were given a regular wash, clean clothes and had their bedding changes regularly
Patients were separated according to their illness to prevent spread of disease
Beds were spaced out, fresh air circulated from open windows
1859, Notes on nursing - Set out the training nurses should receive, nurses were taught to be as clean as possible, to change dressings and to be proper assistants to doctors and surgeons
1863 Notes on hospitals - Introduced new ideas about the design of hospitals. Incorporate use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet and follow a suitable diet.
St Thomas Hospital adopted the 'pavilion principle' devised by Nightingale - six separate wards at right angles to a long, linked corridor which encouraged good circulation of air.
