2 - Inequality as a modernist idea

Cards (5)

  • Baudrillard
No knowledge can be assumed by other people - we live in a society with a 2 minute attention span.
  • Rojek
People live in an unreal world of theme parks and consumerism. People create their own identities by what they buy rather than by reference to people around them.
  • Hebdige
Consumer identities are developing in modern UK. Postmodernists are likely to look at media and other cultural artefacts to see how people buy into identities. Society is becoming more fragmented and diverse (like Weber). Communities are breaking down and there is no value consensus.
  • Inequality is a modernist idea that doesn't actually exist. Those who describe inequality, believe it must have a resolution.
  • People only develop a sense of inequality when the issue is important to them. The issue is for individuals, not groups within society.
