• To taste anything different

  A second of peace
• I force my quaking hand


  1. Doused in chunder to edge away from my side

  2. Jaggedly clasp my canteen and savour the last drop of english water

  3. Before I even swallow it mixes with my saliva and all relief is gone
• I brave a deep breath


  1. Pulls my whole stomach with it, ready to spill out the corners of my mouth

  2. I force it to fall back down as I know I wont ever eat again

  3. I realise now that I'm tearing the walls of my cheeks trying to focus on the taste of lukewarm blood against my frosted teeth
• Extending my torpic arm


  I struggle to make a fist, like forcing magnets together at the same pole
• I've decided that this bleak sight will be where I close my eyes and go in a few hours
• When I've done my part
• 'Clear the ramp, 30 seconds'
• The beach, only metres away now
• 'Starboard approach on the left push up to the Czech hedgehogs'
• 'Keep your actions clear, don't get sand in your weapon. I'll see you on the beach'
• Our rifles chink. Our helmet tightens. Our hearts stop.
• The ramp wheel screams, spinning uncontrollably
• 'Go. go, go'
• It will be over
