postmodernism

Cards (4)

  • There is no grand metanarratives and therefore there are no social causes of crime to be discovered.
  • Postmodernists draw attention to what they see as an increasing detachment of formal agencies of social control such as the courts and police to more informal methods such as private security firms, CCTV or localised policing which reflects the fragmentation of society.
  • People are regarded less as citizens with rights and more as consumers and customers seduced into avoidance of harm through participation in the new consumer society.
  • Each crime is one-off event motivated by an infinite number of individual unrelated causes including intangible emotional reasons.
