Reversible reactions

Cards (5)

  • What is a reverisble reaction?

The products of the reaction can react to produce the original reactants
  • What dynamic equilibrium?
    • The same number of forwards and backwards reactions are taking place
    • Dynamic equilibrium can only occur for a reverisble reaction in a closed system where none of the products or reactants can escape
    • In dynamic equilibrium the concentrations for all substances remain constant
  • Position of dynamic equilibrium?
If their is a greater concentration of the products ( C and D ) then we say the equilibrium lies to the right else , if the concentration is greater in the reactants (A and B )we say the equilibrium lies to the left
  • Endothermic and Exothermic reactions?
One direction will be exothermic(gives out energy to the surroundings) and the other will be endothermic( takes in energy from the surroundings)
    • The amount of energy taken in from the endothermic reaction is equal to the amount of energy given out in the exothermic reaction
    • The energy change of the backwards direction will be the opposite for the energy change of the forwards direction
  • Hydrated copper sulfate?
    • The hydrated copper sulfate crystals are blue. If we heat them up the water will leave resulting in white anhydrous copper sulfate powder. We need to heat them up because the forwards direction is endothermic which means it takes in energy from the surroundings.
    • If we add a few drops of water to the white anhydrous copper sulfate powder the backwards reaction would take place and the blue crystals will form again. The backwards direction is exothermic
