O’Brien’s torture continues. We learn that O’Brien wrote Goldstein’s book. He explains the Party’s motive for power. He then forces Winston to look at his body, now malnourished and horribly thin.
‘There are three stages in your reintegration…There is learning, there is understanding, and there is acceptance.’
(about Goldstein’s book) ‘I wrote it. That is to say, I collaborated in writing it. No book is produced individually, as you know.’’
‘As a description, yes. The programme it sets forth is nonsense. The secret accumulation of knowledge - a gradual spread of enlightenment - ultimately a proletarian rebellion - the overthrow of the Party…It is all nonsense. The proletarians will never revolt, not in a thousand years or a million. They cannot…There is no way in which the Party can be overthrown. The rule of the Party is for ever.’
You could see it in his face. O’Brien knew everything.
‘Slavery is freedom. Alone - free - the human being is always defeated.’
‘We control matter because we control the mind. Reality is inside the skull.’
‘You must get rid of those nineteenth-century ideas about the laws of nature. We make the laws of Nature.’
‘Nothing exists except through human consciousness…Before man there was nothing. After man, if he could come to an end, there would be nothing. Outside man there is nothing.’
‘Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own?’
‘Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.’
‘There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother. There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy.’
‘If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - for ever.’
‘The heretic, the enemy of society, will always be there, so that he can be defeated and humiliated over again.’
‘The more the Party is powerful, the less it will be tolerant…Goldstein and his heresies will live for ever. Every day, at every moment, they will be defeated, discredited, ridiculed, spat upon and yet they will always survive.
‘Men are infinitelymalleable.’
‘Do you understand that you are alone? You are outside history, you are non-existent.’
‘You are rotting away…Do you see that thing facing you? That is the last man. If you are human, that is humanity.’
‘You are a difficult case. But don’t give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you.’
