Prophethood

• • Risal - prophet
  • Risalah - messengers of God, starting with Adam and ending with Muhammad
• Adam:

  • Father of humans
  • Was formed from colourful soil - diversity of humans
  • Sinned against God but confessed, was remorseful and was forgiven - became first prophet
  • Created as God's khalifah (representative on Earth)
  • Built first Ka'ba in Mecca
• Ibrahim:

  • Regarded as hanif
  • Was born into family of polytheists - had inner knowledge of tawhid and rejected his family views - seen as greatest prophet before Jesus
  • Rebuilt first Ka'ba - story of Noah
  • Devotion to God - sacrifice of his son
  • Was tempted by Satan to disobey God - threw rocks at him
• Musa:

  • New prophet was needed as teachings of Ibrahim were lost
  • Led Isralites out of slavery in Egypt to Promised Land
  • Given Tawrat (Torah)
• Dawud:

  • Israel's greatest king
  • Made Jerusalem holy place for Muslims
  • Given Zabur - hymns to praise God
• Isa:

  • Successor to Moses
  • Given Injil - performed miracles
  • Reject idea that Isa is a God
  • He is a chosen prophet
  • Was not crucified - did not die - God did not allow evil to triumph over his prophet
  • Was taken up to heaven - will reappear in second coming
• Muhammad:

  • Extremely devout
  • Chosen as he was humble and honest
  • "People, no people or messenger will come after me and no new faith will emerge."
