Imagery

Cards (14)

  • Senses used to make creative effective imagery
    • Visual
    • Kinetic
    • Auditory
    • Tactile
  • Kinesthetic senses
Allows us to feel our body as it moves through different actions; sensory nerves in muscles, joints and tendons provide us with feedback
  • Auditory senses
Are used to monitor the way your playing environment sounds
  • Tactile senses
Allow you to take in how the equipment you are feeling use
  • How imagery improves performance (PEASA)
    1. Providing a mental template of rehearsed sequences
    2. Enabling athletes to practice and prepare for events and eventualities they are likely to encounter during competition
    3. Allowing potential technique problems to be identified
    4. Slowing down complex skills so that key components can be isolated and correct movements felt
    5. Allowing athletes to pre experience the achievement of goals
  • Types of imagery
    • Internal - Where you imagine what you would see if you were performing that skill
    • External - Where you watch your performance from the view of an external observer
  • PETTLEP model of imagery

    • Model created by Holmes and Collins to assist athletes in developing effective imagery
    • Physical, Environment, Task, Timing, Learning, Emotion, Perspective
  • Physical component of imagery
Imagery should be as physical an experience as possible, including wearing the right uniform, holding correct uniform
  • Environment component of imagery
Relates to where the imagery is performed and should replicate the actual environment as closely as possible
  • Task component of imagery
Imagine the exact requirements of the task. Needs to be specific to the ability level of the performer
  • Timing component of imagery
Refers to the speed at which imagery is completed - try to imaging the task being completed at real time
  • Learning component of imagery
Imagery experiences should reflect the stage of learning over time
  • Emotion component of imagery
Try to ensure the level of arousal and specific emotions experienced during a performance is replicated through imagery
  • Perspective component of imagery
Internal perspective most advantageous- through your own view point
