    • A place is a location with meaning
    • An objective sense of place is based on real facts and not influenced by personal beliefs or feelings
    • A subjective sense of place is influenced by or based on personal beliefs or feelings, rather than based on facts
    • A space is a location which has no social connections for human being. No value has been added to this space
    • Identity is a complex pattern of conscious and unconscious ideas, feelings, values, goals, preferences, skills and behavioural tendencies relevant to an individual
    • Perception is how something is viewed, regarded or considered, our perception of place will be influenced by out individual identities
    • 5 different facets of identity that can influence your view of place:
      • age
      • gender
      • sexuality
      • religion
      • role
    • Age:
      • as you get older your life experiences will cause your identity and perceptions to change
    • Gender:
      • Traditionally public spaces were male dominated while private spaces were female
      • gendered spaces often reflect the societies values and views
      • females have traditionally been excluded from some places
    • sexuality:
      • some spaces may feel dangerous / unsafe depending on your sexuality
      • Hebden Bridge is the lesbian capital and these places are more open minded, inclusive and have a strong community
    • Religion:
      • River Ganges has been the holy river of Hinduism
      • Basin supports hundreds of millions of people
      • Hindu’s cast the ashes of their dead into the river, believing it gives the deceased direct passage to heaven
    • Role:
      • creates fear, insecurity and anxiety the more role you have
