Cards (12)

  • Spinal cord is housed wihtin neural canals of vertebral column
  • 2 general areas in the xs of spinal cord:
    • outer white matter
    • inner grey matter
  • White matter consists of myelinated nerve fibers and supporting cells, neuroglia or glial cells
  • Grey matter consists of some neuroglia and neurons
  • Central canal is lined with cerebrospinal fluid-producing ependymal cells
  • Dorsal cornua
    • area in the grey matter that projects into the white matter
  • Ventral cornua
    • contains axons which are continuous to the outside as spinal nerves
  • Dorsal cornua: afferent nerves
    Ventral cornua: efferent nerves
  • 2 connective tissue layers covering spinal cord:
    • loose dura mater
    • inner, thinner pia mater
  • Pia mater
    • connective tissue layer that has some veins and adipose tissue
  • The space in between pia mater and dura mater is subdural space
