  • What does development mean?

    A process which improves the quality of life for people .
  • What does GDP (per capita) mean ?

    The total income of a country divided by the number of the population (per capita).
  • What does GDP PP stand for?

    Gross Domestic Product Purchasing Power
  • What is GDP PP?

    A method to measure and compare the economic output of different countries. For an example you can many things in one country for £5 but in another country you can only get a few things.
  • What does Human Development Index mean?

    A statistic to measure the development of a country by combining wealth, education and health.
  • What does Poverty Line mean?

    The minimum income a person needs to have in order to fulfil the basic needs of life.
  • What does Access To Drinking Water mean?

    The percentage of people who can access clean water within 1km.
  • What does Literacy Rate mean?

    The percentage of people who can read and write over 15
  • What does Corruption Perception Index mean?

    A ranking system from 0-10 which shows how stable or corrupt a government is.
  • What does Birth Rate mean?

    Number of live births per 1000 people per year.
  • What does Death Rate mean ?

    Number of deaths per 1000 people per year
  • What does Dependency Ratio mean? 

    The amount of people who are the normal working age (15 - 65)

    The average number of births per woman
  • What does Infant Morality Rate mean?

    The number of children who die before their 1st birthday per 1000
  • What does Life Expectancy mean?

    Average lifespan
  • What does Maternal Mortality Rate mean?

    The number of mothers who die per 100,000 live births.
  • What does Low Income Countries (LIC) mean?

    A group of poor countries
  • What does High Income Countries (HIC) mean? 

    A group of wealthy countries
  • What does Middle Income Countries (MIC) mean?

    Countries that has large reserves of raw materials like iron and oil which encouraged investments and growth in the 1980’s.
  • What does Newly Industrialising Countries (NIC) mean?

    The NIC’s grew rapidly in the 1990s because the US and other European countries moved their manufacturing overseas. The countries are known as the Asian Tigers made from Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan etc
  • What does Recently Industrialising Countries mean?

    India and China have sped up their industrialisation even more.
