Paper chromotography:
Get a piece of paper and draw a line at the bottom of the page (
baseline
) with a
pencil.
Add sample of ink onto the
baseline
Find a beaker a fill it with a
shallow
amount of
solvent
(water or ethanol).
Place
filter
paper into the solvent (place lid on top of beaker so that none of the
solvent evaporates
).
Solvent will then
seep
up the paper and the different dyes will
dissolve
in the solvent and move up with it.
Once solvent has almost reached
top
of the paper, we take paper out of the beaker and leave it to
dry.
Rf value = Distance travelled by the
substance
/ distanace travelled by
solvent.
