A
solenoid
is a coil of
wire
You can increase the
strength
of a magnetic field that a wire produces by wrapping the wire into a coil, called a
solenoid
This happens because the
field lines
around each loop of
wire
line up with eachother
This results in lots of
field lines
pointing in the same direction, which are very close to eachother. This makes the field
stronger
The magnetic field is strong and uniform inside but outside it is just like the one of a
bar magnet
You can
increase
the field strength by adding an
iron
core, this becomes an induced magnet
If you stop the current, the magnetic field
disappears
, as it can be turned
on
and off
