Brain scans

• study brain, levels of activity, diagnosis of abnormalities, structures of 2d and 3d, living brain, in relation to specific functions, non-invasive.
• CAT scans - similar to X-rays, radiation is more than an X-ray, used to loo at brain structure, images of brain, can use to look at abnormalities, less detailed than MRI, Torrey et al SZ enlarged ventricles to brain.
• MRI scans - magnetic, align atoms, structure is more precise than a CAT scan, 2d and 3d images, FMRI scans - levels of activity in relation to brain structure. Maguire research - taxi drivers, hippocampus.
• PET scans - radiation, glucose tracer, levels of activity in specific areas, colours indicate high/low activity. Red = very high, Black = no activity. Still or moving images. Raine et al - brain scans in murderers and non-murderers.
