Metals

Cards (12)

  • Ferrous: metals contain iron and are attracted to magnets
  • Non-Ferrous metals: do not contain iron and are not attracted to magnets
  • Ferrous metals will rust unless their surface is coated with another material
  • Ferrous metal examples: cast iron, mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel , galvanised steel
  • Non-ferrous metals: They react less with water, many react with oxygen to form a coating that protects the underlying metal
  • Non-furrous metals examples- aluminium, copper, gold, silver, lead, zinc
  • Alloys examples: stainless steel, brass, bronze, solder
  • steel= Alloy of iron and carbon
  • Stainless steel= Alloy of iron and chromium
  • Galvanised Steel=Steel with a thin coating of zinc
  • Bronze= Alloy of copper and zinc
  • Solder= Alloy of tin and lead
