  • Superior judges
    judges that hear cases at a higher level courts
  • Supreme Court Justices
    Sit in the Supreme Court where they hear final appeals that must involve a point of law of 'general public importance'
  • Lord Justice of Appeals
    Sit in the Court of Appeal and is usually a panel of three hearing appeals
  • Inferior judges

    Hear cases in the lower courts
  • Recorders work part-time in the County Court and Crown Court
  • In civil courts the judge may be involved in allocating cases to the right track and deal with any pre-trial issues
  • At trial, the judge will preside over the court, decide legal issues concerning the admissibility of evidence and give a reasoned decision in favour of one of the parties
  • If the defendant is held liable the judge will decide the award of damages or other remedies such as injunctions
  • Once the cases has been decided the judge will also have to deal with the costs of the case and decide how much of the successful party's costs the unsuccessful party will pay

    Harming a person's reputation
