  • Private funding
    individuals pay for a solicitor or barrister and is very expensive and in practice it really only applies to businesses and wealthy individuals
  • Many solicitors offer a free half-hour interview ad some will even offer their services 'pro bono' which means free of charge in particular cases
  • Private legal insurance
    house insurance and vehicle owners should also have an insurance policy. individuals pay for these themselves
  • Conditional fee agreements
    The main way of funding a civil case. Under this scheme, the solicitor/barrister agrees to take no money from you if they lose the case. If they win they can raise their fee to a maximum of double the usual rate. The success fee has a cap on personal injury cases of 25% of the damages.
  • Public funding
    Public funding for civil cases is very limited. It is not available for tort or contract cases.
