Multi Store Model

    Cards (7)

    • Multi Store Model
A Model consisting of the three memory stores and how they are linked through processes that enable the transfer on information: the sensory register, short term memory and long term memory
    • What is the sensory register
Picks up information from the five senses and has a store for each sense
constantly receiving info but remains in register for very brief period
To transfer further into memory we must lay attention to it
    • What is the short term memory
Where information is held to be used for a current task
Information needs to be rehearsed in order to not decay and move to the long term memory
Has a small capacity so now info can displace older info
    • What is the long term memory

Memories that last longer than the duration of the STM (due to rehearsal) become a permanent memory here
      unlimited capacity
information we think we have forgotten can be stored her but just be unaccessible
    • Overall Model
1.Sensory info from environment goes to sensory register
2.If not attended to lost through decay, if paid attention to goes to STM
3.In STM must use mental rehearsal for it to go to the LTM, if not lost through decay
4.In LTM become permanent memory, can be lost by decay if not retrieved
    • Evaluation of MSM: Strengths
      Milner reports on H.M
removed his hippocampus damaging his LTM (could not form any new long term memories)
STM still working with a digit span of 6 numbers
Shows the STM and LTM are separate stores supporting MSM
    • Evaluation of MSM: Limitations
Conflicting theory- Brown and Kulik showed that rehearsal it is not necessary to transfer info from the STM to the LTM
Memories that are highly emotional, shocking etc go straight to the LTM- Flashbulb memory
      Contradicts the MSM
