  • By the early 1950s, some progress was made:
    • Desegregation of military after WW2
    • Desegregation of juries, so black people could serve in them
    • Increase in number of black people registered to vote
  • NAACP:
    • Founded in 1909
    • Aimed to use law to improve civil rights
    • Tried to influence decisions of government to:
    -> help more black people be able to vote by challenging rules that made it hard for them to vote
    -> reduce violence by signing anti-lynching bills
  • CORE:
    • Founded in 1942
    • Wanted to use passive resistance to end segregation
  • KKK:
    • Members believed in white supremacy - white people were from a superior race
    • Were very powerful as it was difficult for black people to get justice in court
  • Plessy v Ferguson:
    • Was in 1896
    • Allowed for "separate but equal" facilities in US
