Little Rock High School

• • Little Rock was to be desegregated fuy after the Brown Ruling
  • Many black students were chosen to attend, but due to threats, only 9 students were willing to attend in 1957
• • Governor Faubus ordered state troops to stop the students from entering the school and organised big protests
  • The events were covered by the media, causing big outrage
  • Embarrassment caused Eisenhower to order the removal of the troops
  • He sent federal troops to protect the students, despite his opposition of legally enforcing segregation
• • Federal troops protected the Little Rock Nine the whole school year
  • Governor Faubus closed all schools in Little Rock for the next academic year but was forced to re-open and integrate in 1959
• Massive resistance:

  Massive resistance to desegregation was made. Illegal in 1959, but loopholes were found:

  • Only desegregating one school per year
  • Only accepting a few black pupils each year
  • Testing that was rigged against black pupils
  • Only desegregating a few schools but keeping the rest segregated
