kariba dam (DD)

• a top down scheme funded by international organisations and the government
• produces hydroelectric power for zambias copper industry
• HEP doesn’t produce carbon emissions so it’s good for the environment
• HEP is renewable
• 57,000 tonga people were displaced from the zambezi valley and had to resettle really far away
• there are concerns the dam can collapse due to its age which will result in 40% of southern africas HEP lost
• lots of people who moved died of hunger because the new land was less fertile so crop production was poor
• the HEP helps zambia develop its manufacturing industry of copper
