  • Heat energy travels from the cold reservoir to the heat reservoir
  • As heat naturally flows from hot to cold, work done must be done
• Refrigerators:

  • Removes as much heat from a cold space per J of work done
  • The cold space is the inside of the fridge, the hot space is the room
• Heat pumps:

  • A heat pump pumps the maximum possible heat per J of work done
  • The cold space is usually the outside environment
  • They are used to heat homes/rooms/water
