Vietcong tactics

• Guerrilla warfare:

  • Guerrilla warfare is when fighters avoid open battles and ambush their enemies
  • It was used due to small size of VC
  • It was hard for the ARVN and USA to fight back because the VC blended into villages as they wore no uniform
• Ho Chi Minh trail:

  • The USA couldn’t stop it as goes through other countries, and they wouldn’t declare war on them
• Tunnels:

  • The VC used tunnels as bases and ambush spots
  • They contained hospitals, storage and weapons and allowed the VC to move unseen across South Vietnam
  • The US couldn’t fit in tunnels to destroy them, so destroyed any entrances they found
• The Vietcong got the support of the people by:

  • Killing unpopular government officials in villages
  • Using propaganda
  • Dressing like ordinary Vietnamese people
• the Vietcong weakened the enemy by:

  • they used hit and run tactics
  • used light weapons and equipment to move quickly
  • stayed close to US troops to not be bombed
  • sabotaged road and bridges
  • made networks of tunnels
• • The Vietcong drove out the enemy through battles
  • They did not fight battles often so it was a surprise tactic
