    • In March 1972, North Vietnamese troops attacked three different bases in South Vietnam
    • The attack surprised the US but the ARVN managed to repel the invasion with US air support
    • In retaliation, the US began heavy bombing in North Vietnam in April
    • This was called Operation Linebacker
    • As a result of dropping mines on Haiphong harbour and stopping Chinese and Soviet ships from entering North Vietnamese waters, the US managed to destroy nearly all of the North’s war industry and supply routes, as well as their communication and radio networks
    • China and the USSR began to encourage the North to reach a peace settlement
