• Epiphysis - ends; spongy bone contains red marrow
• Diaphysis - middle; compact bone; medullary cavity
• Cartilage - smooth; slippery; thick layer of tissue; covers the ends of bones; flexible and acts as a shock absorber
• Ossification - process by which cartilage cells are replaced by bone cells
