LTM

    Cards (5)

    • types of LTM
divided into two types : declarative and implicit declarative-knowing that
      implicit- knowing how
    • declarative memory
includes episodic and semantic memory Episodic- concerned with our personal experiences, tend to remember specific details, have to make a conscious effort to recall them Semantic- memories that require conscious recall, information that is available to everyone, usually begin as episodic
    • implicit/procedural memory
concerned with skills and knowing how, doesn't require conscious recall, usually develop through repetition and practise so memory becomes automatic
    • evaluation of LTM : Strength
Supporting research- Tulving et al used PET scans on participants brains while they performed memory tasks. both episodic and semantic memories were recalled from the prefrontal cortex however the left side was responsible for semantic memories and the right side was responsible for the episodic memories, therefore supporting suggestion there are different parts of the LTM
    • evaluation of LTM: limitations
methodological limitations- large majority of research based of case studies of one person eg HM so it is specific to them, therefore it is hard to generalise the findings
