Linkages

Cards (12)

  • Linkages
A mechanism made by connecting rigid parts. They can change the magnitude of a force, change the direction of a force or transform it into a totally different motion.
  • push/pull
A linkage that maintains in the direction of the input motion so that the output travels in the same direction
  • Bell crank
Changes the direction of the input motion through 90 degrees
  • why is bell crank used
Used to change horizontal motion to vertical motion or vice versa
  • Why are rotary systems used
    To drive mechanisms and machinery
  • What do rotary systems do
Transfer the direction of force along different parts and through changes the angle and direction
  • Why is a cam used
To change rotary motion into reciprocating motion through the use of a follower
  • Why is a crank used
To rotate a shaft, which rotates the follower up and down
  • Circular cam or eccentric cam
    Steady rise and fall
  • Pear cam
Rapid rise and fall followed by long dwell (rest)
  • Snail cam
long dwell followed by steady rise and sudden drop
  • Heart shaped cam
slight rise and fall with no dwell period
